Why Education? Especially for girls?
This isn't speculation. It's happening today!
- One of every six people in the world is an adolescent girl living in the poverty. That’s 600 million people --- twice the population of the United States.
- 77–140 million children worldwide are unable to access education due to Gender and Poverty. And 70% of the students out of school are girls.
- 25%-50% of girls in developing countries become mothers before age 18
- 14 million girls aged 15-19 give birth in developing countries each year.
- In 2001, 62% HIV-positive youth in Africa were girls. In 2007, that figure was 75%, girls are 6 times more likely to be HIV-positive than boys.
And Things Are Just Getting Worse…Unless GIRLS Get Educated!
- When a girl receives seven or more years of education, she marries four years later and has 2.2 fewer child
- When women and girls earn income, they reinvest 90% of it into their families, as compared to only 30-40% for a man
- They pass on the value of education to their children...
- They are better able to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS infection..
- They participate more in the political processes in their communities and countries
- Eventually, they will be able to invest in their communities and make the world better
